If possible, at least 2 weeks before the interviews, the company mails books to the candidate to hint them what company culture they are getting into. It costs <100$CAD to the company, but it goes a long way to show what the company cares about.
My suggestion:
What the company selects sets the tone. Prefer approachable content, i.e. I really liked Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman but personally found it hard to read. A book like Predictably Irrational by Dan Ariely is great but somewhat off topic.
Note that there’s no programming book in my suggestions.
Most people can learn how to program, it doesn’t matter if they studied liberal arts or biology. But for some people, it’s hard for them to learn how to behave well within a team and you will probably have to fire them.
Here’s a list of the books I recommend for people working in technology;
Turn the ship around
Thinking in Systems
Liars and outliers
Thinking fast and slow
Managing what?
VC investing
